Some teachers don't emphasize the rhythm part. Well, I took piano as a kid but didn't understand rhythm until I later took drums. Anyway, those in any sort of school band class will learn timing, regardless of the instrument.

Maybe those teachers are teaching based on their own experiences in how they learned. Every teacher has a slightly different style of teaching. How would you encourage the teachers & the students to learn more about the rhythm aspect then?
